Just Off the Pill and Trying to Conceive? 5 Things You Need to Know to Increase Fertility After The Pill! By Paige Challoner, Fertility Specialist.

Trying to conceive after taking the pill?  Experiencing irregular or no period? Need help with getting your body baby ready?

Although the pill can be highly effective for birth control, what many of us were not told is that taking it is damaging to your body in ways that can affect fertility later.

Here are 5 Things you need to know about resetting your body after use of the pill and increasing your fertility.

  1. Back to a natural cycle. When you take the pill you are adding more estrogen to your body, which signals to the brain and pituitary gland to shut down production of follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone– two hormones required for ovulation and key for conceiving. When you go off the pill, the body needs to re-establish the normal rhythm or communication lines that were interrupted by the additional estrogen.  This is why a lot of women experience irregular or absent periods after the pill, there is a disconnect in communication from the pituitary gland to the ovaries. The odds of this will be higher for women that had irregular cycles prior to taking the pill.

One way to get your period back into a normal cycle is with seed cycling.  Seed cycling helps nourish your body with certain seeds that assist with balancing hormones during the two stages of your cycle.  Start by consuming 1-2 tablespoons each of flax seeds and pumpkin seeds daily from Day 1 -14, the follicular phase.  Switch to 1-2 tablespoons each of black sesame and sunflower seeds on Day 15-28, the luteal phase.

For absent periods or irregularities where cycle days are unknown, follow the moon cycles.  The new moon would be Day 1 of your cycle– flax seeds and pumpkin seeds.  Switch on the full moon, Day 15, to consuming black sesame and sunflower seeds.   Now if you are completely opposite of this, don’t panic.  Women who are healers will have their cycles flipped, which allows them to be in support of others during their cycles.  You can still conceive on this opposite cycle, what is important is getting your body back to a regular cycle.

  1. Detox! With a body full of additional hormones, it is important to give your liver and intestinal system some love.  These are the primary organs that assist with breaking down and getting rid of toxins and wastes, including excess hormones, and when they are not functioning properly they will have a direct effect on your fertility.  So consider a 21-day detox that focuses on assisting your liver and intestines with cleaning things out.  Ensure that you are drinking plenty of water during this entire process, and that you are having at the very least one bowel movement each day.  If you aren’t, consider increasing your fiber and swap out any caffeinated beverages with an herbal tea that has organic Senna leaf.  Once you are all cleaned out, onto the next steps.
  2. So healing your gut will help maximize what foods you are eating as absorption of nutrients increases.  This will further help with reducing any inflammation.  Some must tries include eating bone broth, collagen, and fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kombucha and kefir.  Note, if you are feeling worse with the use of fermented foods it is wise to get tested.  There may be something else that is not right with your gut, such as candida growth, or parasites.  The more you know, the sooner you can get working on what your guts need.
    1. Replenish nutrient stores. There are some key nutrients that are depleted from the body when the liver is working on metabolising synthetic estrogen in the pill.  These depleted nutrients include magnesium, zinc, vitamins B2 (riboflavin), B6, B12 and folate.  It is important to get tested and see where you are currently at with all of your nutrients so that you can get working on replenishing.  Once you know what your baseline is you will want to get a high-end multivitamin and/or prenatal vitamin.  Do your research and find ones that are high quality and easily absorbed. Consider taking a liquid folic acid which is easier for your body to absorb. If you are already struggling with digestive issues, then a metabolically activated folic acid is even better.

5.Have your thyroid checked. The pill disrupts every part of your thyroid, from secreting thyroid stimulating hormone to making and using thyroid hormones. Thyroid issues can have symptoms that are related to your fertility, such as abnormal and absent periods, and loss of libido, but they can also show up in reproduction as miscarriage, preeclampsia and pre term labour.  So you will want to get a full panel of thyroid testing done to see where you are currently at, and again if you do happen to conceive.

Rebuild your gut. A pill with high estrogen is inflammatory to the body which in turn can create a leaky gut.  So not only will nutrient absorption be affected, but with the increase of inflammation in the body, the body’s defenses increase. When the body’s defenses increase, everything else goes in shut down, especially not working on building a new life and adding more to the workload. This will be even more so if the inflammation spreads to the reproductive system.
