How To Know If Your Seminal Fluid Is Too Acidic For Conception. By Christine Rooney, Fertility Specialist

I am guessing it isn’t everyday you stop to think about the health of your seminal fluid.

Well… it’s a topic worth knowing about if you are desiring to increase your chances of creating a baby. The pH of your seminal fluid can provide you with important information that you can use to make more informed choices regarding your fertility.

What is seminal fluid pH?

In general, pH is used as a scale to indicate how acidic or basic (alkaline) a solution is. It ranges from 0 to 14, meaning that anything with a pH of 7 is neutral, anything above 7 is basic and anything under 7 is acidic. In this case, the solution is your seminal fluid. The optimal range for your seminal fluid regarding fertility is in the slightly basic range of 7.2-8.

Two reasons why knowing your seminal fluid pH is important:

  1. Help your sperm reach the egg

The pH of your seminal fluid is vital in increasing the chances of your sperm making it to the egg waiting to be fertilized.

The female vagina tends to be acidic in nature, so you want your seminal fluid to be in that slightly basic range to protect your sperm from the effects of the acidic environment. If the pH of your seminal fluid is too low for example, it can decrease the motility of your sperm, so it becomes more difficult to reach the egg or penetrate it if it does make it.

Once you know your seminal fluid pH results, you can determine what factors such as tobacco use, nutritional choices, or stress levels you can address to help bring your pH levels into the optimal range and increase your chances of getting your sperm to that egg!

  1. Underlying health issues

When your seminal fluid pH is out of the optimal healthy range, it may indicate an underlying health issue. For instance, your seminal vesicle is responsible for maintaining the alkaline state of your semen. If your pH is acidic, it may indicate a blockage in your seminal vesicle.

On the other hand, if your pH is basic, it may be a sign of infection in your genital urinary tract which can impact fertility.

By talking to your doctor and having your seminal fluid pH tested, you will get information to know if active steps are required to bring your levels back into the optimal range. All of which can increase your fertility potential.
